The tasks an Anaesthetist is expected to perform include:
Administering anaesthetics to patient undergoing surgical operation according to the nature of the operation
Examining patient to determine his/her capacity to withstand shock of operation and anaesthesia
Selecting local or general type of anaesthetic to be administered, such as ether, chloroform or cocaine according to nature of operation
Checking apparatus for operational efficiency and administering selected anaesthetic to the patient
Informing surgeon of patient?s readiness for operation
Checking pulse and watching respiration and eyeballs of patient while under anaesthesia and surgery to check his/her general condition
Examining and treating patient for ill effects and weakness after operation
Providing for blood and fluid transfusion during operation and oxygen therapy, if necessary
Knowledge of airway management
Knowledge of anatomical capabilities of veins and arteries, nerves and plexus blocks
Skilled in using the anaesthesia equipment
