The tasks a Civil Engineer, Railways is expected to perform include:

Planning, organising and supervising maintenance and laying of railway tracks, and construction of bridges, roads, buildings, sheds etc. according to prescribed specifications

Surveying area(s) with assistance of surveyors to collect necessary details such as soil condition, rivers, drains, course of water, localities and village?s in route, etc.

Inspecting track and other projects during and after construction to ensure conformity prescribed standards

Taking special safety measures to protect track and bridges during floods and landslides, etc.

Proficient in designing work on basis of collected data, estimating cost and submitting them to authority concerned for approval

Adept at preparing or getting detailed drawings prepared by architect and planning execution of work

Well-versed in arranging for labour, material, machinery, appliances, etc.

Proficient in getting embankment consolidated, levelled and ballasted

Adept at getting sleepers and rails laid in position and fish plates screwed to join rails

Well-versed in ensuring that all work done under him is as per prescribed standards

Proficient in supervising construction, repair and maintenance of building, railway stations, bridges, platforms and other railway structures

Knowledge of constructing tunnels and laying track through them

Knowledge of inviting tenders and allotting work to approved Contractors

Ability to focus for long hours

Diligent and hardworking

Problem solving skills

Eye for detail

Good mathematical skills

Accuracy in work

It needs one to be on their toes

May require supervising Workers

Local travelling is not a part of this job role

Part-time work and contractual jobs maybe available in some cities

Working hours

Working hours are 9/10 hours everyday for 5/6 days a week
