The tasks a Pointsman, Railway expected to perform include:

Operating hand points for setting railway lines under instructions of Points Jamadar or Station Master in non-interlock and non-signal lines for shunting and arrival and departure

of trains

Setting points under instructions from Station Master or Points Jamadar

Locking facing-points in non-interlock yards or non-signal lines for safeguard against derailment of train

Proficient in signalling trains using hand flag or light to proceed in right direction

Adept at ensuring that other connected lines are clear of obstruction and brake of stationery train is away from fowling mark

Knowledge of coupling or uncoupling wagons and coaches during shunting of trains

Good physical health

Good mental health

Flexible for spending long days away from home
