The tasks a Pressman is expected to perform include: Preparing for ironing operations Ironing the garments

Folding the garment as per the customer specification

Familiar with the correct machine, tools and equipment

Knowledge of different types of garments and its ironing requirements

Familiar with the folding procedures applicable as per different garments

Knowledge about garment parts (pockets, fronts, backs, collars, cuffs, sleeves, etc.)

Working from home is not available.Part-time work and contractual jobs are available.Travelling is not part of the job. Need not handle a team

Working hours

Indian laundry services work for 6 days a week and 8 hours every day. This may vary from company to company. In hotels, the laundry department works for 7 days a week, but in shift rotations.Is the job suitable for a candidate with special needs?Yes

This job is not considered dangerous or hazardous.One may develop occupational hazards like burns, increased risk of physical injury and accidents if not taken care of.

For freshers -`5,000 to`7,000 per month

For candidates with 1 to 2 years? experience -`10,000 to`12,000 per month

For candidates with over 2 years? experience ?`15,000 to`18,000 per month

Growth estimates of Laundry industry in India1

In 2014 according to consulting firm KPMG, the organized laundry market in the country is currently around `5,000 crore and the unorganized market would be of around `2,20,000 crore.

"India has a huge unorganized laundry sector which needs to be professionally handled. The way markets have developed in the US, it has not happened in India. However, India is going to grow in laundry business and there is a need for organized players to provide world-class services and educate the unorganized sector", said KPMG.

Latest Trends in Laundry Sector in India

Wardrobe is growing at around 20% every month. Domestic laundry player White Tiger is eyeing the huge potential once the organized market becomes more stabilized as there is a huge scope for the laundry business to prosper.

"Laundry is a necessary evil. During recession, consumers can stop buying clothes but they would want to keep their existing garments clean. This industry, which has been least hit by the downturn and promises a brighter future for the dry cleaning and laundry sector in India. As a result of which we have grown by 25-30% every year and in future, we could grow at a modest rate of 22-25%," said Rajeev Sekhri, vice-president, White Tiger.

Laundry services like White Tiger, Pressto, Diamond Fabcare, etc.Textile companies like Arvind Brands Ltd., Pantaloons Retail India Ltd., The Raymond Group, Landmark Group, Shopper's Stop, Reliance Retail Ltd., etc.Apart from textile companies, there are many hotels and laundry services across country that hire Pressman.

Maximum number of job openings are available in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Pune and other Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.2
