Preservation Clerk

Minimum 12th and Certificate or Diploma in Conservation of Archival Heritage

Minimum 2 years of experience in a relevant field

The tasks a Preservation Assistant, Archives is expected to perform include:

Maintaining archival records in good and usable condition by air-cleaning, fumigating and repairing damaged records

Collecting books and records for arranging them in special racks

Coating the racks with a chemical solution such as creosote, cresol, etc. to keep away insets, pests and moth

Sorting out books and records according to their subject

Arranging records horizontally on shelves or specially built racks to prevent sagging and to eliminate strain on backings

Tying files or loose records between boards

Dusting the shelves regularly by hand or by a vacuum cleaner

Keeping the place airy by opening windows frequently

Examining records periodically and removing damaged records for mending

Fumigating damaged records by placing them in loose form in special airtight boxes containing chemical crystals to destroy insects, pests and larva

In-depth knowledge of archives management

Ability to work with adhesives, dusty books and library materials

Ability to inspect the collection for damages, and recording and repairing them

Skilled in keeping the place pest and rodent free

Skilled in classifying and arranging records according to their categories

Knowledge of different types of books and paper materials

Knowledge of the proper binding style for commercially bound monographs
