Library Assistant

Minimum 10th with a certificate in Library Science

The tasks a Library Clerk is expected to perform include:

Compiling records, sorting and shelving books

Issuing and receiving library materials, such as books, periodicals, films, newspapers, etc.

Recording data and due dates on cards by hand, or via a stamping machine to issue books to patrons

Inspecting returned books for damage, verifying the due date, computing and receiving overdue fines

Reviewing records to compile a list of overdue books and issuing notices to borrowers

Sorting books, publications and other items according to the classification code and returning them to shelves, files or other designated storage areas

Locating books and publications for patrons

Issuing the borrower's identification card according to established procedures

Filing cards in catalogue drawers according to the prescribed system

Repairing books using mending tape, paste and a brush

Answering inquiries of a non-professional nature on the telephone or in person and referring persons requiring professional assistance to the Librarian

Typing material cards, issuing cards and duty schedules

Ability to keep a constant vigilance on the library

Skilled in operating a computer and printing reports and records

Ability to periodically check for damaged books and repair them

Knowledge of placing books on the shelves according to their category/genre

Skilled in issuing library cards and issuing books against those cards

Knowledge of the regulations of the library regarding fine collection, due dates, etc.
