The tasks an Interpreter is expected to perform include:

Interpreting, converting or elucidating spoken language or words into one or other required languages for being understood by those who do not

speak the original language

Listening to speaker attentively, and quickly and fluently translating spoken language into specified language

Knowledge of different languages

Proficient in converting speech in one language to another

Adept at listening carefully to convert speech in another language

Well-versed with technology like microphones, headphones, telephones, video and the Internet

Proficient in different languages like Japanese, German and French

Will be updated

Excellent command of English

Listening skills

Good communication skills

Patience

Linguistic abilities

Professional conduct

It needs one to be on their toes

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is a part of this job role

Working hours

Working hours are 10/12 hours everyday for 6/7 days a week. This may vary from company to company

Being self-employed is also an option. In this case, the working hours and days will be flexible

Overview of Media and Entertainment Industry in India

The Media and Entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country. The television segment in India accounts for over 40% of the revenues. It also contributes to above 35% of the revenues to the Indian advertising industry. The Print segment in India, with a readership base of over 250 million, is estimated to be the second largest print market in the world.

The current employment across Media & Entertainment sector is estimated to be over 1 million persons (in terms of direct employment only). The Private Final Consumption Expenditure (PFCE) on Entertainment is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13% to 14% between 2008 and 2022.

Keeping in mind the current employment, and the expected growth in different segments in the industry, we project that the total employment in the Media and Entertainment industry would increase from about 1 to 1.1 million persons in 2008 to about 4 to 4.1 million persons in 2022, which translates to an incremental human resource requirement of about 3 million persons. All these factors mean that there will be a huge demand are Interpreters across towns and cities in India.
