The tasks a Press Operator is expected to perform include:

Tending machine that steams and presses wrinkles from woollen cloth

Guiding cloth, into the machine and under weighted cylinder, which steams material and presses out wrinkles

Turning hand wheel to adjust cylinder pressure according to type of cloth processed

Sewing end of new material to end of material in press, using sewing machine

Cleaning and oiling pressing machine

Skilled in operating pressing machine

Skilled in cleaning and servicing the machine

Ability to operate sewing machine

Skilled in effectively pressing the cloth without hampering its quality or losing its colour

Not applicable

Market Textile & Handloom Industry in India

India?s textiles sector is one of the mainstays of the national economy. It is also one of the largest contributing sectors of India?s exports contributing 11 per cent to the country?s total exports basket. The textiles industry is labor intensive and is one of the largest employers. The industry realized export earnings worth US$ 41.57 billion in 2013-14. The Indian textiles industry, currently estimated at around US $108 billion, is expected to reach US $ 141 billion by 2021. The Indian government has come up with a number of export promotion policies for the textiles sector. It has also allowed 100 per cent FDI in the Indian textiles sector under the automatic route.

The Indian textiles industry is set for strong growth, buoyed by strong domestic consumption as well as export demand. The textiles sector has witnessed a spurt in investment during the last five years. The industry (including dyed and printed) attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) worth INR 6,710.94crore (US$ 1.11 billion) during April 2000 to February 2014. This shows that in coming decades a boom can be expected in the sector with immense demand of trained professionals. Therefore, the career as a Press Operator has a bright future and opportunities are only going to rise in coming time.
