The tasks a Book Mender is expected to perform include:

Mending and repairing damaged and worn books, manuscripts, and other records to put them in condition for re -use or resale

Examining the damaged books, manuscripts and recording and assessing extent of damage

Numbering the pages and erasing the disfigurations

Cutting the covers loose from body and body stitching with knife

Cutting or tearing carefully damaged pages or linings

Repairing the damaged pages with transparent tapes

Resewing body firmly and pasting linings in place, reinforcing as necessary with a cloth or paper

Trimming edges of pages with knife or mechanical cutter

Knowledge of mending all kinds of books

Well-versed with recording the number of damaged books

Knowledge of resewing torn books for re-sale

Proficient in using mechanical cutter, etc.

Well-versed with replacing repaired cover or new ones to body

Adept to clamping book in press for specified time to bond

Ability to imprint or emboss lettering on cover

Diligent and hardworking

Result-oriented

Focus for long hours

Ability to follow instructions

It needs one to be on their toes

Need not handle a team

Local travelling is not a part of this job

Part-time work and contractual jobs are available in some cities

Work from home option is not available

Working hours
Working hours are 10/12 hours everyday for 5/6 days a week. This may vary from institution to institution

For fresher - INR 6,000 to INR 7,000 per month

For candidates with 2 yearsof experience and above - INR 7,000 to INR 9,000 per month

The Indian Printing Industry, growing at a rate of 12% per annum, comprises more than 250,000 big, small and medium printers. The current annual turnover of the industry is more than INR 50,000 crores (USD 11 Billion).
