The tasks of a Second Officer, Ship is expected to perform include:

Assisting Captain, Ship in navigation

Assisting Chief Officer, Ship in supervising loading and discharge of cargo

Performing night duty in port while important cargoes are being loaded and unloaded

Taking turn with third officer on cargo while in port

Maintaining all navigational equipment on board in good order

Starting and stopping gyrocompass and winds chronometer daily

Keeping watch on bridge during specified hours of day and night for ensuring safe navigation

Fixing position of ship at sea by taking morning, noon and afternoon readings with sextant and reports to Captain

Keeping watch on anchor, when ship anchored outside port

Knowledge of terrestrial and coastal navigation

Knowledge of celestial navigation

Knowledge of meteorology

Knowledge of bridge watch keeping, emergencies and BRM

Familiar with signals and communications

Well-versed in cargo handling and stowage inspect

Ability to report defects and damages to cargo spaces, hatch cover and ballast tank

Knowledge of ship construction, safety, ship stability, etc.

Knowledge of environmental protection

Ability to monitor compliance with legislations

Ability to look after sick on board in absence of Medical Officer

Ability to focus for long hours

Diligent and hardworking

Ability to follow instructions

Good communication skills

Highly motivated and self-driven

Physically fit

Ship usually sails for 5/6 days a week and works for 14/15 hours every day. This may vary from ship to ship
