The tasks an Orientation and Mobility Instructor is expected to perform include:

Assisting blind and visually impaired persons to achieve personal adjustment and maximum independence through training in techniques of daily living

Interviewing clients and analysingtheirlifestyle

Administering assessment tests to determine present and required orientation and mobility skills

Training clients in awareness of physical environment through sense of smell, hearing and touch and to travel alone, with or without cane

Teaching clients personal, home management and communication skills

Teaching clients to protecttheirbody, using hands and arms to detect obstacles

Instructing clients in arts, crafts and recreational skills, to improve sense of touch, co-ordination and motor skills

Teaching clients to read and writeusing

Braille

Instructing clients in use of reading machines and common electrical devices

Developing effective listening techniques of the clients

Instructing clients for in-group activities, such as singing, playing modified sports activities to encourage and increase capacity for social participation and improve general health

Preparing progress report to allow members of rehabilitation team to evaluate clients' ability to perform varied activities essential to daily living

In-depth knowledge of behavioural psychology of the visually impaired

Skilled in teaching all the necessary techniques to a blind person

Equipped in training the client in self-protective techniques

Skilled in instructing the client in the use of electronic travel devices

Familiar with working with parents of young children and infants with no or low vision

Skilled in counselling techniques

Basic knowledge of physiotherapy, optometry, etc. which is associated with orientation and mobility instruction

Proficient in reading and writing with Braille

Local travelling is not a part of this job role
