Engineer Food Processing Plant

Minimum B.Sc. (Chemical, Dairy Technology, Food Technology, Nutrition)

Minimum experience of 3 to 6 years in the relevant field

The tasks a Chemical Engineer, Food is expected to perform include:

Developing new or improved methods and techniques of food processing

Studying and checking the details of the products as well as producing methods that are employed in the existing process

Obtaining additional information on possible improvements in the existing processes

Directing and supervising the various processes to get maximum efficiency

Supervising the installations of new equipment or providing alterations to the existing equipment

Co-ordinating the activities of the workers engaged in the preparation of food material such as dairy products, baby-foods, dehydration of vegetables, canning of food, etc.

Undertaking all the process that involve new research in the food industry

Reporting to the research division for proper investigation, in case of any inexplicable and exceptional phenomenon

Knowledge of all the commercial production possibilities related to food

Knowledge of the chemical composition involved in the processing of dairy products, baby-foods, dehydration of vegetables, canning of food, etc.

Skilled in the research methods of developing new or improved methods for food processing

Knowledge of the different equipment used for food processing

Equipped in undertaking new research for the food industry

Skilled in writing reports for research activities

The Food Industry in India

The Indian Brand Equity Foundation in their report on the Food industry of India have referred to this industry as the highest profit incurring sector considering the scope it has to offer for value addition. In particular the food processing industry in India has been recognized as a high-priority area. This is because the food processing industry is one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth.

The latest figures have revealed that the total food production in India is likely to double in the next 10 years as the country?s domestic food market is estimated to reach US$ 258 billion by 2015.

Considering world data, the Indian food and grocery market is the world?s sixth largest with its retail contributing 70 per cent of the sales. It is projected to grow at the rate of 104 per cent, touching US$ 482 billion by 2020. This indicates vast scope for both investors and exporters.

With all these figures in consideration it is safe to say that the demand for a Chemical Engineer, Food will surely increase in the coming years.
