Sugar Industry in India

Sugar industry is an important agro based industry that impacts rural livelihoods of about 50 million sugarcane farmers and around 5 lakh workers directly employed in sugar mills.Today Indian sugar industrys annual output is worth approximately 80,000 crores. There are 682 installed sugar factories in the country as on 30.11.2012, with sufficient crushing capacity to produce around 300 lakh MT of sugar. Two standalone refineries have also been established in the country in the coastal belt of Gujarat and West Bengal, which produce refined sugar mainly from imported raw sugar as also from indigenously produced raw sugar.Sugar is an essential commodity under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The Central Government has been following a policy of partial control and dual pricing for sugar. India being the second-largest producer of sugar in the world plays a dominant role in the global sugar business. Indian sugar is also exported from time to time in different countries. Our professionals are engaged in key positions in various sugar producing countries. With footprints in more than 90 countries, Indian machinery and equipment are now globally accepted and have been widely used.

With the deregulation of this sector, the private players are also emphasising on research in improved production techniques of sugar and its by-products. The importance of research is felt by the government also and various state governments is running facilities for research in the said field.

Hence it can be said that Sugar Technologists have great potential in future.
